About

Serum iron measures the level of iron bound to transferrin in the blood. Low levels can indicate iron deficiency anemia, while high levels may be seen in hemochromatosis (iron overload).TIBC measures the total amount of transferrin in the blood that can bind to iron. High TIBC is commonly seen in iron deficiency anemia, while low levels are often found in anemia of chronic disease. Transferrin saturation is the percentage of transferrin (the iron transport protein) that is saturated with iron. A low saturation (<20%) is indicative of iron deficiency, while high saturation (>50%) can indicate iron overload or hemachromatosis.
